I was invited to attend a meeting and a Press Conference organised by Datin Azimah Rahim's PAGE (Parents' Action Group for Education) which seeks to ask the Government NOT to abolish the PPSMI (the teaching of Maths and Science in English). The Government has said that the PPSMI will be abolished for the school year beginning January 2012.
.
You can visit PAGE's website here
.
The Governmenmt has to really ask itself whose interest they are representing when they want to abolish the PPSMI? Indications are the majority of the population, especially the Malays support the PPSMI.
.
I think this is also why the Government is shying away from conducting a referendum to directly ask the people their views. The Government knows that a referendum will support the PPSMI. The Government is taking a huge risk with the future of the nation, especially the Malays, just to avoid embarrasment.
.
PAGE is trying to raise one million signatures in a petition to the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister to keep the PPSMI. You can read the Petition online here .
.
Please go to the page and sign the petition. It will take not more than one minute. It is for the future of all Malaysians. Here is the short petition :
.
To: Malaysians
To,
YAB Datuk Seri Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak
The Prime Minister of Malaysia.
YAB Tan Sri Muhyiddin bin Yassin
Education Minister of Malaysia.

Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohammad
Former Prime Minister of Malaysia.

PETITION TO MAINTAIN THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS IN ENGLISH (PPSMI) IN SCHOOLS
I, the undersigned, am in favour of maintaining the teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI) in schools.
This letter endorses my mandate and full support to any representing party that is seeking to maintain PPSMI in schools.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned
(Datin Azimah, I think we need one in Bahasa Malaysia as well. Many parents who cannot speak English still want to support this petition).
.
DEAR BLOG READERS, THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY AT CITIZEN AWARENESS AND CITIZEN GOVERNMENT. PLEASE COPY AND PASTE THIS PETITION AND THE WEB ADDRESS IN YOUR BLOGS, IN YOUR EMAILS AND POST IT TO ALL YOUR CONCERNED FRIENDS. LET US HELP PAGE GET THE 1 MILLION ONLINE SIGNATURES.
.
This is a Vote for the PPSMI. Please lets hang together on this one or our kids will surely hang separately.
.
We are already close to the Club of Doom. If we abolish the PPSMI we are much closer to the Club of Doom.
.
Talking and listening to so many people at the meeting, there is a huge undercurrent against abolishing the PPSMI. The majority of Malaysians, especially Malays, support the PPSMI. They really want their children to be educated in English, at least in Science and Mathematics.
.
I think for the Government to ignore all these voices of protest is to take significant risks. Abolishing the PPSMI may become yet another election issue. People are already not happy with the Government over so many things.
.
People will vote FOR the PPSMI and they will vote against any attempt to abolish it.
.
If the Government abolishes the PPSMI, the Government stands to lose a significant number of votes. The Bloggers are still fighting to regain support back for the BN Government. So I dont think it is advisable, at this juncture, for the Government to alienate a substantial block of voters who want the PPSMI.
.
There were two big surprises for me at the PAGE meeting. The first was seeing Suara Perkasa (the newspaper of the ultra right wing Malay rights pressure group) writing a page length in support of PPSMI.
.
Titled 'PPSMI : Apabila emosional mengatasi rasional' the article took issue with certain parties who have made the most emotional and nonsensical claims to support the abolishment of the PPSMI. One such person is the muallaf and very confused ustaz Ridhuan Tee Abdullah, a Chinese convert who is now more Arabic than the Arabs and more Melayu than the Melayu.
.
.
Even Perkasa shares the view that "Ibubapa, guru dan pelajar bersetuju dengan PPSMI". Coming from the most extreme ultra right wing Malay NGO in the country, with a following in excess of 300,000 (YB Zulkifli Noordin the MP for Kulim - has just been elected a VP of Perkasa) this endorsement for the PPSMI by Perkasa is more proof that the Malays are in support of PPSMI. I hope the Government is listening.
.
The other surprise was the presence of another Malay NGO Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) whose president Azwanddin Hamzah showed the results of a survey done by the JMM covering 27,200 parents from predominantly rural areas. 70% of the people surveyed were Malays. Their 4 month research findings showed that 55% of PARENTS wanted to retain the PPSMI.
.
Only 13% of parents are opposed to the PPSMI. 32% said 'Belum Pasti'.
.
Of the students who were surveyed in the same areas (mostly rural areas) 79% of students said that they wanted the PPSMI to continue.
.
Therefore, when the Government says they want to abolish the PPSMI, I am curious to know whose voices are they representing? It is NOT the suara rakyat.
.
Is this a Government of the people or not? If the majority of the people and the majority of students want the PPSMI to continue, then why is the Government going against their wishes? What is wrong with the Government?
.
Someone said there is no need for the Government to conduct a referendum for or against the PPSMI because the Government knows what it is doing. I think the person who said this will not qualify to audition as a clown for Malaysian Idol. He is making sick jokes. Even the Prime Minister has said that 'The days of 'Government knows best' are over'.
.
I agree fully with the PM. And on this PPSMI issue, the Government has totally lost the plot.
.
OK you can disagree with me. I can disagree with you. That is ok. But why does the Government refuse to listen to the majority who want the PPSMI? Why doesnt the Government conduct a free and fair referendum on this matter. Or at least the Government engage an independent consultant and conduct a wide ranging survey to get at the truth? The people want the PPSMI.
.
And here is something else. While Maths and Science in English is being abolished, the Maktab Rendah Sains Mara or MRSM will have entire campuses devoted to teaching in the English Language !! Macam mana pula?
.
.
So the IGCSE will "melahirkan pelajar yang global, cemerlang dan kompetitif". Habis anak orang lain semua boleh jadi kurang global, kurang cemerlang dan kurang kompetitif. Banyak cantik lah.
.
There is already an MRSM centre in Seremban that prepares students for the International Baccalaureate examinations in English.
.
Then we have also allowed the International Schools which are now mushrooming all over the country. Rich people, anak Menteri and anak VIPs can now send their kids to International Schools where children are educated in English and prepare for the British 'O' Levels, 'A' Levels and such.
.
The ordinary people can send their kids to Governmenmt school where they will get a more ordinary education yang mungkin kurang global, kurang cemerlang dan kurang kompetitif. How does the Government answer this little oversight?
.
.
There is something seriously wrong with the Government's thinking here.
.
There were many other things discussed. The Kamus Dewan Bahasa is a disgrace to the Malay race. The kamus Dewan Bahasa is written by pengkhianat bahasa. The Kamus Dewan Bahasa has ciplak hundreds and thousands of words from the English language, mostly scientifik words or "saintifik" words. Words like saintifik, genetik, DNA, elektron, mikron, fizik, mikroskop are all ciplak words from the English language. And the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka fellows say that they are pejuang bahasa! Pi dah mabuk!
.
There is a simple reason why the pengkhianat bahasa at the Dewan Bahasa continue to ciplak words especially scientific terminology, from the English language and put it into their kamus. Because there is no "language infrastructure" yet in the Malay language to support concepts like saintifik, DNA, electron orbits, valence and such. "Konsep" atau concept pun belum ada bro. So that is why the Dewan Bahasa ciplaks words from the English language.
.
But there is a major problem here. The kids in the towns, cities and kampongs cannot go home and engage their parents, uncles and grandparents in simple everyday conversation using words like elektorn, mikron, mikroskop and such. Why? Because not only these words but the concepts behind them are still alien in the Malay language. It is going to take time, a long time, before the Malay language evolves to abosrb and even create these concepts by itself.
.
So without a supporting language infrastructure, it will be that more difficult for the kids to grasp these ideas. The Malay langauge spoken at home cannot accelerate their understanding of scientific concepts yet. Why? Sebab bahasa Melayu masih belum mempunyai kapasiti untuk membawa konsep besar disebalik setiap perkataan saintifik yang baru diciplak dari bahasa Inggeris.
.
But the English language can. So instead of Dewan Bahasa 'stealing' words like saintifik, elektron, mikron, DNA, genetik, fizik, konsep, hipotesis, tesis and such from the English language - which has contributed very little to moving our nation forward, the easier (and more effective option) is to teach the kids science and mathematics in the English language.
.
Some very poorly informed people have also said that we can translate English materials into Malay. These are very poorly informed people who do not understand many simple things. Out of interest, I buy and read English books about Nuclear Submarines. I know of only one other person who may read such books. So I know only two people who may read books on submarines.
.
If we wait for Malay translations, no one in their right mind will translate and publish a book about nuclear submarines when only two people or a handful of people will read those books in Malaysia. The same goes for solar energy, DNA genetics, animal husbandry, hydroponic farming etc. The market will be too small to translate such books from English to Malay. So if I cannot read English, I will not be able to access these books in Malay. I will become a katak di bawah tempurung. Worse I may become poor.
.
We must just stick to the PPSMI. We switched from English to 100% Malay sometime in the 1970s. The result is there for everyone to see. Are we happy with our achievements? We are producing unemployable university graduates and school leavers who cannot even count.
.
In 2003, we switched back to English (for Science and Mathematics only). It will take time but we are beginning to see some results. This PPSMI generation is moving up the learning curve, faster than the previous generations. To switch back now will be disastrous.
.
There will also be an English speaking and non English speaking divide in the country. The International School kids, the elite MRSM schools that teach in English and those who send their children overseas will become the elite. The non English speaking will end up working for the English speaking (just like now).
.
Sadly it will be the Malays who will get the short end of the stick. This is a certainty.
.

I support everthing you say in this article Syed... except the part about Dr Ridhuan Tee.
I like reading his blog and his attack on parti ultra-kiasu DAP..It's ok if he is more Malay than Malay.. looking at the pathetic state Malays are in now.. we need all the help we can get. But I disagree with his take re PPSMI so...
NEVER GIVE-UP, NEVER SURRENDER... let's fight for PPSMI!
you are totally right Encik Syed..'orang melayu juga yang akan rugi' when the government abolish the PPSMI..
To my best knowledge, Malaysia never has held a referendum and i dont think it will.
Coming to terminology, yes , we cannot cope with the translation and borrow a lot from English. I remembered during my U exam in the 70s, i had difficulty answering some questions in B,M bcos there no Bahasa malaysia equivalent for some scientific term in english, so we wrote in 'rojak' form. Honestly till today, can anybody tell me how many science/med journals are written in B.M.None! all research materials in science/med are in English.Sooner or later, we still need to learn english, no harm to learn it earlier! rite
Obviously you don't understand politic. If you live among the blinds, you will be the king if you have one eye. Why you want risk your position as the king by letting your people to see the world? Your people are happy being blind and you are happy being the King, kenapa chari masaaalah? Keep them blind as long as possible and you will remain their king as long as you wish.
Tuan Syed,
It is not the issue of the abolishment of PPSMI. The real concern for the government is that we are lacking in terms of sufficient and capable manpower to educate our children the proper English.
Having said that, government has not abandoned the effort altogether. If you read the news, they are bringing in native English speakers to educate our kids. I think it is a good start.
The importance of our children to understand English goes beyond the 'S' and 'M' as in the PPSMI. We want to move further beyond that.
Hope government can engage the public more so that all of us will have a better understanding on the government's direction.
Just take it easy lah Tuan Syed, may be it will be a blessing in disguise, BN akan hancur come GE13.
Thanks Tuan Syed for this article and thanks for supporting PPSMI. Indeed, it has been said so many times that the majority of the people or at least the majority of the people that directly involve with this policy (parents, students) support PPSMI.
those who against this policy are only the people from pakatan that have hidden agenda. Unfortunately, the government is willing to listen to these people.
Some people including ministers are confused with this policy and they don't really understand. Sorry to say, even TS Muhyiddin is confused. the MBMMBI policy is not the answer to PPSMI. The MBMMBI policy shows how misleading they are about the PPSMI.
I would like to suggest the following reading to get more understanding about PPSMI. This is simple FAQ.
http://chewal.blogspot.com/2009/03/ppsmi-faq-frequently-asked-question.html
Here is a survey done for about 18 days with 3,056 respondents. You can see the result and the analysis :-

Go PPSMI
Pemansuhan PPSMI hanyalah untuk menjaga hati si Samad sasterawan negara tu yg jelas nyata ada kepentigan peribadi
How Malaysian can look forward if the refference books were generally in English?
Puak tu cakap senang aja, pakai google translate, itu pasal plug n play jadi cucuk dan maen....
Saya amat menyokong PPSMI. Cuba kita lihat ayat ini dalam bahasa Inggeris; "Carbon is oxidised into carbon dioxide". Dalam bahasa Malaysia, ia amat mengelirukan:
"Karbon dioksida kepada karbon dioksida!".
Bro Syed, our readers of scientific materials in bahasa Melayu is just too small in numbers to justify the publishing of bahasa Melayu scientific journals. Even serious journals like DBP's Dewan Masyarakat cannot survive. Our readers normally like light readings, gossip magazines, etc.
Thus, it makes more sense to import those English scientifics journals than to wait until local publishers publish bahasa Melayu scientific journals.
Dr Mahathir once said, Pejuang Bahasa adalah Pengkhianat bangsa.
This half ass measure is not going to get your people out of goonduland.
Do the brave thing. Abolish BM and make English as the official language.
Hahahaha.
Saya nampak orang2 elit disini tidak mahu memikirkan nasib murid2 miskin dipendalaman. Bagaimana nak membantu anak belajar jika ibubapa sepatah tak faham bahasa inggeris.
So apa masalahnya. Saya membaca blog ini hampir setiap hari dan hampir kesemuanya saya bersetuju..but not this one, because this is my expertise. I have many experience with students and my own children.
Lagi satu, have all of u here read kajian by UPSI about PPSMI? Very consistent with what i've experienced. Why can't we leave this matter to pakar/academicians.?rather than to orang2 kaya disini.
U people just dont understand the poor.
Lepas SPM belajar overseas or IPTS, then pandaila english. No problem.
Dah mabuk ngan anwar
So true. My husband was one of the early MRSM batches to study in the US in the early 80s. he said initially, they couldn't even understand the lecturers or do homework because of limited English. It was very tough. he was from a small town, and had minimal exposure to English.
I, on the other hand, am KL born and bred and exposed to English all my life, so no problem reading and writing. In fact, because of my proficiency in English, I have had no problem getting jobs in the private sector especially with multinationals.
One of my American bosses once told me he gave me the job despite lacking the proper qualifications because of my better English, compared with the other candidates. Easier to communicate with, he said.
My son is studying PPSMI and I've found that kids, especially Malay kids, have become more comfortable with using English because it's just a language to tackle Maths and Science subjects. It eliminates the dreaded formal structure of learning English. The younger ones under PPSMI are more confident to "tembak" English unlike their older cousins in univ who segan to "speaking."
The govt should continue PPSMI. It's the only way to expose Malay kids to English and ensure better jobs in the private sector. Because I've seen numerous times how Malay candidates are dropped, despite good qualifications, because they can't articulate themselves during the interviews.
Not everyone will grow up to be scientists or mathematicians. But a good basic foundation in English, learnt at a young age when knowledge is easily absorbed, will better help our kids in the job market later on.
Why shackle ourselves?
I
Tuan Syed,
You are known yo have strong views on many issues and more often than not you lambast the opposition. How come you are very silent and almost have ignored the horrors highlighted by the Auditor General in his Report.
You seem so cowed to lambast Barisan Nasional/UMNO on their mismanagement as highlighted by yhe Auditor General.
Takut kot?
Anggap lah PPSMI itu sebagai alat untuk melonjak bangsa Melayu menjadi kuasa besar teknorat ditanah air mereka....biarlah bersusah untuk mendapat ilmu...kerana inilah satu-satu cara untuk melonjakan bangsa melayu kebatas keupayaan manusia (atau dalam bahasa yang dibenci Samad Janggut, Ungku Aziz..PPSMI is a tool to push the new malay generation to the limit of human performance.
Haji Tukiman
This bugger Ridhuan Tee is another dungu la...
He is totally backboneless... Sway with the wind wherever it blows..
He doesnt know he is the most hated guy and yet more often than not comes out to say the most darnedest things.
The only way our children can be spared is by people power. politicans dont have the backbone.
allo syed,
-another installment of ppsmi's saga. what an epic battle between federation and faction.
-the bolehland federation succumbed to the demand in a play of the most dramatic act to please the malays that it's really a malay nationalistic federation. politically this drama could garner malays votes henceforth the continuation of the bn government regardless of the sufferers would be mostly malay kids who are factually needed ppsmi as a preparation to face reality.
-confused politicians and their suckers have made bolehland's education systems gone haywire. i hate to see bolehland creating double standards caste-like education systems in which full of inequalities and discriminating to the kids and will always favoring the rich over the poor. i dont give a shit for the rich as they could get the best of whatever for their children. my concerned is to the ordinary children at the average schools who will be deprived and denied the opportunity to learn in english all because of the government's idiocy and foolishness in making decisions.
-we are now living in a world without border. like it or not english is the medium of communication. we have to prepare our kids with relevant knowledge in the global language to compete with others globally.
Syed:
Life in Malaysia has never been the same since it embraces Bahasa Melayu as the language of study.
The rich continues to send their children overseas. Our politicians including the PM of yesteryears (and those of today??) send their children overseas so that they can have a better life when they return because they have a good command of English.
If BM is so great and our University is so great why are they sending their children overseas? Shouldnt they be studying in a Malaysian University?
The truth is those in power wants to doom Malaysia and its citizen so that they can control Malaysia for their benefit. People who cant speak another language cant do business elsewhere and cant go anywhere.
Life is great in Malaysia with the regime of the past 50 years...NOT!
Tobat lahum saya tak akan pangkah BN--- Rahim Bakar
En Syed,
I do not support PPSMI, because PPSMI is a wrong approach towards english proficiency.
My children experience with PPSMI showed that while they not yet grasp the English, they have to grasp the Math and Science subjects at the same time. This is impossible.
For me, the correct approach is to teach English widely and efectively from early schooling, say Pra-school and up to Standard 3 that make students able to converse and read English material conveniently. Then only teach the subject (math, science and whatever subject) in English, because by that time student would already be able to read english books and understand teachers speaking.
PPSMI is like asking a 6 months baby to feed himself. Stupid idea.
I suspect PPSMI is a bad hidden agenda which is made acceptable by stupid malay ministers.
Reading the comments.. there seem to be some confusion. There are 2 issues here:
1. Learning English to enable the students to grasp (understand) the latest technology / knowledge by being able to read all the books / journals mostly written in English.
2. Lack of English communication skills of the graduates.
The educated Japs can't SPEAK English well but UNDERSTAND English where matters. PPSMI is mainly to tackle issue 1 so that educated Malaysians are at least on the same par with the Japs.
In my opinion PPSMI is not a magical solution to issue 2. It might help a bit - since the students now know a lot more words in English. But improving communication skills require a different kind of approach - maybe drama, story telling, public speaking, debate classes?
Due to the constant employers' complains re the graduates' communication skills.. that's why MoE is taking action to solve issue 2.
If you ask me, issue 1 is more important.. thus my support for PPSMI.
Who else to be blamed but UMNO. What else to be blame but the 'Ketuanan agama dan bangsa' rubbish. The real aim is to keep the non-Putera and Puteri Malays dumb while the elite Malays like Najib send their kids to private boarding schools in the UK. The rest of these elites send their kids to international schools. As for the English programs in the MRSMs, nothing will come of it. These students will never be able to take on the world for they come from an environment skewed to favour them over the 'pendatangs'. Until these students learn the meaning of real competition they will remain nothing more than jaguh kampung.
DEAR TUAN SYED,
I THINK IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO TEACH ENGLISH AND SCIENCE IN ENGLISH. I THINK SCHOOLS SHOULD TEACH ENGLISH IN ENGLISH! WHILE THEY'RE AT IT, THEY SHOULD ALSO TEACH MANDARIN. THIS COULD BE THE PRE-CURSOR FOR A UNIFIED NATIONAL SCHOOL.
Its sad that we are even discussing this till today...we talk about unity and wanting to progress and to do this at MINIMUM we have to master both language...Bahasa for unity and English to progress...
Mastering 2 language should not be a big deal...our parents had no problems with it...we think that as time goes by we improve...instead we are taking a step backwards...
We should aim high...so as I mention earlier ...at MINIMUM we must be proficient in both languages
Salam Tuan Syed. We, the parents knows whats best for our children. PPSMI is the best option. Borrowing the statement from anon 4:43 'Lets fight for PPSMI!'
Listen to what malaysian linguistic association, deputy president give his reasons.
First ,he say using english is a detriment/(threat) to B.M language. Then he say the survey of parents wanting to go back to english, not accurate. Lastly he say B.M is the language of knowledge, should use more in science...is he kidding!!
How are you going to argue with this dunggu?? Give up...
Regard Ridhuan Tee, how he so malay? his parent still chinese, which part of the gene changes??.Law expert Professor Aziz bari just 'reprimanded' this associate professor over use of 'force' on hudud. He wanted to show off some 'legal' intellect but got shot down hihi...embarrassing bcos he expect malay professor to support him

Hi Syed,
Thanks for your support. Please note the petition initiative is done by some parents and not PAGE. Our official online registration is at www.pagemalaysia.org where there are 2 types of registration ie 1) Parents/Friends/Non-students and 2) Students.
The online forms are in dual language ie in BM and English.
Thank you
Regards
Ben
What to say, except we are going back 30 years instead of moving 10 years ahead...
I thought its the parents and their children's opinions that counts not somebody's else.
Am just curious , how come the PM has not really comment on this, takut DPM kah?
Dr.Ridhuan Tee is an idiot, a racist , a bigot and the only way to deal with him is to totally ignore him
Anyway, good article Syed and incidentally since you are close to the powers probably you could find out why the government is so adamant in refusing the ppsmi
Yes, the malays are going to get the short end of the stick, cant agree on anything or get any consensus, as usual.
Most chinese parents dont bother, they can send their children to international or private schools, kiasu parents will send kids for more tuition in english, they know english is an important passport in the future career. The politicians also know, that why they have an 'escape' route, they also sent their kids to private schools/aboard.
Unless, you dont want yr kids to work in private sector, you got to be proficient in english for career advancement.OK provided if you want yr kids to work for Gov but it can absorb limited numbers only.
On this part on Dr Ridhuan tee, he smart, he selalu tembak Dap bcos he know who is his pay-master. Recently, he and perak mufti claimed many apostates among malays and called for anti-apostasy law. If He claims he so good in islamic affair, ask him to check whether there is anti-apostasy injunction in the Quran!!he really know how to play ball....
Tq so much Tn Syed for not just highlighting the PPSMI issue but strongly supporting it.
Apa susah sangat Muhyiddin?
(BTW Mandarin isn’t the mother tongue here. Mother tongue anak Cina terdiri dari Cantonese, Hokkien, Hakka, Hainanese etc). Anak Melayu pulak dilayan macam beruk. Diikat Tuan beruk. Tak boleh pandai2 mintak. Kena ikut cakap Tuan beruk.
Just to correct the problems of students who couldn’t keep up (mostly because of your teachers’ shortcomings), you make a mockery of all the students who tried so hard and succeeded to rise to the challenges of the PPSMI.
Kalau Muhyiddin can guarantee my children a job when they graduate from university, go-ahead with all the policy flip-flops he wants. But if he can’t guarantee, Muhyiddin and his total MBMMI policy can just #$%^ &*(
Saya tak mahu undi BN lagi dah, pemimpin nya tak farsighted.
THe world has gone global. The chinese parents are more realistic, the more languages their children learn, the better. They can speak english, mandarin and B.M.Job prospects go beyond boundary.
Dato Syed, one thing we has not addressed is the quality of teachers. There is a correlation between them.
@mae,
Your comment about PPSMI shows that you don't really understand the objective behind PPSMI.
Not only you, quite a number of people who object to the PPSMI policy have this kind of misunderstanding...including the ministers !
For a thousand of times, PPSMI has got nothing to do with English proficiency ! PPSMI is not for english proficiency. PPSMI is not for english proficiency.
This is where the problem comes from when we do not understand the meaning or the objective behind such policy.
Please go and read statements by Tun. Dr. Mahathir about PPSMI. You can read his blog about this. He has written so many articles about it and he has given so many examples to explain the policy.
